Local History Month 2024

Throughout May, Northumberland Libraries will be celebrating Local & Community History Month with various events around the county.
 
Rare books at County Hall
An exhibition of rare books from the Northumberland Local Reference Collection will be on display at County Hall, Morpeth from 6 to 10 May. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the treasures in the collection that is housed at Northumberland Archives.
 
Experiences of the Trenches: Life of a Northumberland Fusilier
Members of the Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland will be giving an interactive talk at Morpeth Library on Tuesday 21 May at 2pm. The talk will cover personal stories of everyday life in the trenches and there will be an opportunity to view archive material and to handle artefacts too.
 
Isolde, Daughter of the Priest – Author talk
On Friday 17 May at 7pm, author John Daniels will be presenting a talk at Berwick Library about his new book - Isolde, Daughter of the Priest. Set in 14th century North Northumberland Isolde tells the story of a young girl who was excommunicated from the church for not paying the corn tithes.
 
Cramlington Heritage Hub events
We are partnering with the Cramlington Heritage Hub to bring a series of talks about the history of the Cramlington area. The talks will take place at the Hub at Cramlington on the following dates:

Wednesday 15 MAY 11.30am -12.30pm - Your Local History Project with Matthew Burge
Wednesday 22 MAY 1pm -2pm - Farming Families of Cramlington with Fiona Mitford
Wednesday 29 MAY  1pm -2pm - Visiting Cramlington’s Past with Brian Godfrey

There will also be one-to-one genealogy sessions on 9 May, 16 May and 23 May.
