Local and Community History Month 2023

May is Local and Community History Month and Northumberland Libraries invite you to join us in celebrating our rich heritage. You can relive border history with the Time Bandits, learn about reconciliation in the WWII Prisoner of War camps or if you’re struggling with your Family History research help is at hand.

Anglo-Scottish border history
From The Hot Trod to Harry Hotspur, join the Time Bandits for an entertaining evening as they bring border history to life. The Time Bandits are Bev Palin and John Sadler and they tell their story with the aid of balladry, some sword and dagger play and enough arms and armour for a decent sized skirmish.
Morpeth Library - 11 May, 7pm
Berwick Library - 24 May 7pm

A Jew who defeated Nazism
In this online talk, author Ainslie Hepburn will share the remarkable story of Herbert Sulzbach (1894-1985) and his role in Anglo-German reconciliation following the Second World War. He made a significant personal contribution by helping German prisoners rediscover the principles of democracy and prepare themselves for rebuilding a new homeland. Sulzbach was the interpreter at the Prisoner of War camp at Featherstone Castle, near Haltwhistle, from early 1946 to 1948.
