Building grants scheme

This workstream will run throughout the whole period of the HSHAZ programme, up to March 2024.

The High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) is a nationwide initiative to secure lasting improvements to historic high streets.

Please note that the scheme is closed to new grant applications.

The Building Grants Scheme is a key component of the Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) which aims to make the town a more attractive, engaging and vibrant place for people to live, work and visit.

The HSHAZ is a partnership between Historic England and Northumberland County Council and aims to bring vacant historic premises back into use and restore traditional frontages along Priestpopple, Cattle Market and Battle Hill.

The Building Grants Scheme is in the final year of the national programme which ends in March 2024, and all funds have been fully allocated.

This element of the HSHAZ programme commenced in 2020 and has supported the repair and restoration of 10 historic buildings and structures along Priestpopple, Cattle Market and Battle Hill.

These improvements are part of the Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone scheme (HSHAZ), which is part of a £95 million government-funded national programme led by Historic England.  It’s designed to secure lasting improvements and help breathe new life into historic high streets for the communities and businesses that use them

The Hexham HSHAZ has been developed by Northumberland County Council and key partners and is backed by a wide range of community and business stakeholders.
