Strategic Transport

The team has responsibility for the council’s transport policy.

The council’s transport policy covers all modes – walking, cycling, road, rail and bus.

What we do
We manage the council’s relationship with key transport stakeholders including The Department for Transport, Highways England, Network Rail, bus and rail operators, Sustrans and the Transport Strategy Unit which supports the North East Joint Transport Committee.

In addition, we have responsibility for developing the pipeline of strategic transport priorities through making the case for funding.  This includes:

  • Northumberland Line Rail project
  • Blyth Relief Road
  • Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans for 12 main towns
  • Lobby for investment in the strategic road network including the A1, A69 and Moor Farm roundabout
  • Lobby for investment in the rail network including the East Coast Mainline, Tyne Valley Line and new stations at Belford and Gilsland

We also lead on other activities such as:

  • Public Transport – management of the supported bus and concessionary travel budgets.
  • Sustainable Transport – working with schools and employers across the county to encourage safe travel by sustainable means as well as helping to facilitate the Northumberland Cycling and Walking Board.
