This page explains the role and objectives of the council’s insurance team.

Responsibilities of the insurance team
  • Review the main operations of all council functions to assess exposure to loss and advise management on the scope, extent and terms of insurance required.
  • Arrange external insurance through the tender process to attain best value.
  • Advise on self-insurance levels and develop, manage, monitor and maintain the council's insurance fund.
  • Ensure the timely settlement of claims.
  • Develop systems and procedures to produce management reports.
  • Maintain relationships with insurance companies, brokers and advisers and liaise with all council departments.
Responsibilities of county council departments
  • Ensure they are aware of what insurance cover they have on their buildings, vehicles and equipment.
  • Notify the insurance team where there have been material changes that could have a bearing upon the council's insurance arrangements, e.g. building closures, disposals and acquisitions, significant building alterations, disposal and acquisition of vehicles.
  • Inform the insurance team within five working days of any incident which might lead to a claim against the council or its insurers.
  • Provide all relevant data to enable the processing of claims.
  • Utilise management reports to improve risk management within the council.
  • Periodically provide information required for the council's insurance renewal process.

Details must include your full name, date of birth and national insurance number. For any motoring incidents, we will also require copies of evidence of your car ownership, tax disc and MOT certificate.

Please provide a full explanation and details of the incident that has occurred and any damage suffered, along with photographic evidence where possible, and two estimates of the value of work required to amend the damage. It is important you provide the precise location of the incident and the date and time. 

Where it is necessary for you to make an immediate repair, e.g. replace a tyre, we also require you to retain the damaged item for inspection by ourselves or our insurance company. 

All claims are thoroughly investigated, and we prosecute anyone found to have submitted a fraudulent claim.
