Stage 6 Fenwick to Berwick-upon-Tweed

The final stage starts near the causeway to Holy Island, then heads north through some of the remotest areas of the coast. Cliff top paths then lead to the historic border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.

From Fenwick, once the A1 and East Coast Railway have been negotiated, the trail heads for the Fenham Flats, part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, an internationally important area for wintering and migrant birds. The trail follows the edge of the sand and mudflats to Goswick. Wide, white sands are an alternative to the path through the golf course. The final leg is along cliff top paths from Cocklawburn, affording fine views north towards our destination. The cliff path drops into the Victorian resort of Spittal with its wide tree-lined boulevard before crossing the ancient bridge into the Border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The trail follows the River Tweed, towards the magnificent Royal Border Bridge before heading up to the Railway Station

Length/grade Distance: 19.5km / 12 miles
Generally good, flat paths, care should be taken north of the Causeway to Holy Island, where the path can be covered at high tides. Care should also be taken when crossing the A1 and the Railway and at Goswick Golf Course.

Services
Limited accommodation is available at Fenwick and at nearby Beal and West Mains. There is accommodation on Holy Island, a detour of about 8km. Berwick-upon-Tweed offers all of the services you would expect from a large town. There are no opportunities to buy food or drink between Belford and Spittal.

Public Transport
Fenwick is served by a bus from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Newcastle. Berwick-upon-Tweed has a frequent train service from London, the South west and Scotland and is well connected by buses from the south and the Scottish Borders. Plan your journey at travelline or call them on 0871 200 22 33
