Exercise for free with Active Northumberland on National Fitness Day!  

 
Active Northumberland is set to throw open the doors to its sports centres on Wednesday 20th September, offering a free activity for everyone to try as part of National Fitness Day 2023.  
 
Booking is now open for a range of free swim, gym, and fitness classes with something for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Active Northumberland’s team of friendly and experienced staff will be on hand to offer help and support.  
 
The National Fitness Day 2023 campaign theme “Your Health Is for Life” is calling for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to come together to recognise the importance of prioritising being active for our mental wellbeing as well as physical health.   
 
One of the key events of the day will be at the new Morpeth Sports and Leisure Centre. Instructor Leona Petch from the Les Mills headquarters will be teaching some amazing free fitness classes. Join Leona and the active fitness team for an unforgettable workout full of fun and energy as people come along and give these exercise classes a go.

“National Fitness Day is encouraging people of all ages and abilities to recognise an active lifestyle has so many benefits for the mind as well as the body. It can make us happier, improve our sleep, help us connect with other people, reduce stress, and raise our energy levels as well as reducing the risk of many chronic illnesses.” 
 
On National Fitness Day we invite everyone across Northumberland to unite and celebrate the fun of fitness. Please come and try a free swim or fitness class. Our team are on hand and ready to help everyone take the first step to living a more active life.” 
 
 
There are a range of activities on offer including:  
 
  • Epic Les Mills event with Leona Petch who will be joining us from the Les Mills headquarters to teach some amazing taster sessions of Body Pump, Body Combat and Shapes fitness classes at Morpeth Sports & Leisure Centre alongside our active fitness team 
  • Try a group fitness class for free 
  • Check out the gym with state-of-the-art kit 
  • Bring a friend for an early morning swim 
  • Gym challenges with spot prizes on the day 
 
Northumberland County Councilor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for Promoting Healthy Lives added: 
 
Whatever your age or activity levels, and regardless of whether you go to the leisure centres regularly or not, we would love you to come along and get involved on the day.   
 
The free activities on offer are a great way to find out more about what your local sports centre has to offer.

In a great addition to this year’s National Fitness Day, PE & School Sports teams will be working with over 20 schools across the county to give children access to Active Northumberland leisure activities. 
  
Over 400 children will join in on the day enjoying bowling and Clip ‘n Climb at Concordia, Wentworth and Ponteland Sports Centres.

Book your free swim, gym visit or fitness class online today, via the app, by ringing 01670 620200, or at your sports centre reception. All sessions are subject to availability, so please sign up early to avoid disappointment.
