Get ready to go green this Libraries Week

Library users across the county are set to enjoy a series of special events next week as Libraries Week returns for 2023 with an environmental twist.

Between 2 and 8 October, Northumberland Libraries will be participating in Green Libraries Week, a national celebration organised by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) to champion the work that libraries do in their communities to support sustainability and climate change initiatives.

Themed events including green and nature-themed story and rhyme time sessions for children, crafts, drama taster sessions, poetry readings and free talks from energy-saving experts will be on offer throughout the week at the county libraries in Alnwick, Ashington, Bedlington, Bellingham, Blyth, Cramlington, Haltwhistle, Hexham, Morpeth, Prudhoe and Wooler.

Visitors will also be able to browse and borrow from the wide collection of specialist titles and resources dedicated to subjects like climate change, climate action, circular economy and sustainability stocked by Northumberland Libraries, both in-branch and via the BorrowBox app, which have already supported a number of local activist groups with their plans to introduce green practices in their communities.

Councillor Jeff Watson at Northumberland County Council, commented: “With the climate crisis and the need to move to a sustainable economy affecting all of us, sharing, and promoting an understanding of the issues and the actions we can take to change our individual and collective behaviours through mediums like Green Libraries Week is essential.

“The work carried out by the Northumberland Library service is vital to spreading the word and reinforcing the message that Northumberland County Council is onboard and supportive of communities and local groups who are looking to make a difference and contribute to our overarching aim to be carbon neutral by 2030.”
