Working to improve county skateboard facilities

Northumberland County Council is working with communities across the county to identify where skateboard facilities can be improved or introduced and how the potential benefits of skateboarding can be increased.

The authority’s sports development team has been hosting a number of community discussions and workshops alongside partners 'Shred the North' to identify gaps in provision and opportunities for development.

It is now working with interested communities to create a Skateboarding Development Plan for Northumberland.  This will focus on potential locations of new skateboarding facilities as well as developing and recruiting coaches and activators to run skateboarding sessions and events and to encourage more people to get involved in the sport

A well-attended countywide workshop was held to talk with local councillors, community groups and interested parties about inclusive skateboarding solutions and to discuss the positive impact they can have on a community.  Plans are now being made to hold more local discussions.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for Promoting Healthy Lives said:
“Skateboarding is a fun activity that appeals to all ages.

“When we think of skate parks, we often think of big metal structures – but that doesn’t have to be the case. Skate Spaces can be low level and incorporated into existing parks and landscapes. Most recent design guidance from Skateboard GB encourages new designs to be inclusive and suitable for everyone, from small children using scooters right up to adults of all ages using skateboards. “
After the 2020 Olympics there was a surge in popularity in the sport and this is expected to rise again following the 2024 Olympics.

Chris Lawton, Community Development Officer at Skateboard GB, said:
It's really exciting to be working with Northumberland County Council and Shred the North which is a not-for-profit organisation, with a mission to bring skaters together across the North East.

“Northumberland County Council is the first Local Authority in Britain to really grasp the 'big picture' potential of skateboarding and to proactively develop a strategy for this.

It understands that skateboarding is not only a healthy, low-cost physical activity, with mental health benefits, but it can also be a catalyst for informal learning and can help local areas think of new ways to enliven public spaces. This could include attracting 'skate tourism' and hosting sporting and cultural events in the run-up to Paris 2024."
