Online resources for schools and adults highlight Hexham’s Heritage

A popular course which aims to inspire people to take an interest in the history and heritage around them is now available online and free of charge.

The course offers an introduction to historical research and is a great way to help people to find out about the history of their surroundings and the lives their ancestors led.

The course uses properties as the focus of the research, but the skills learned can easily be used to research any facet of history, including family trees.

Content within the module focuses on Hexham, however, the same sources exist for many Northumberland communities and the module can be used as a guidance by anyone researching a Northumbrian property.

The resource can be accessed at: nland.cc/history

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member with responsibility for culture said:
“The research techniques courses have proven very popular and have all been oversubscribed.
“To make the training available to all, the HSHAZ has commissioned Northumberland Archives to create a learning resource online that is available for free and will be available long after the HSHAZ project is completed.

“The course offers a great introduction to anyone who would like to find out more about the history of their local area by teaching the methods and techniques used to research and record historical data. “

The HSHAZ has also commissioned Northumberland Archives to create a learning module to support Geography and History Lessons for 7–14-year-olds in schools. The module uses archival sources related to Hexham town centre to explore ideas of human geography, including types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links and will gives teachers and learners the tools to develop their own local studies.  It is available at: nland.cc/learn

The online courses are funded by the Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone, and delivered by Northumberland Archives.
