Bulky waste

Bulky waste is any waste type that is too large to be disposed of via our regular waste collections. This can be anything from garden furniture, televisions, fridges, and carpets.

The latest information regarding bulky waste collections and how this service is operating during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

This information was last updated on 15 May 2020.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current COVID-19 situation, a modified bulky waste collection service was re-introduced on Monday 4 May 2020 to help residents dispose of waste materials that cannot be stored at home without causing risk of injury or harm to health.

Unfortunately larger items can not currently be collected.

Bulky waste is normally additional waste generated by a household that they need to dispose of, including waste types that are too large to be disposed of via our regular waste collections.

Currently we are not collecting large items as they can not be safely collected by a single operative. We are still collecting other items to help residents dispose of any other excess waste that they have on their property.

You can dispose of bulky waste items in various different ways:

  • Look for organisations and charities on our reuse and recycle page to see if any can make use of your items. Some will collect for free.
  • Take most of your bulky waste items to one of our household waste recovery centres (HWRCs) for free.
  • Use our bulky waste collection service. We can collect a variety of items from the edge of your property for a charge based on the number of items. Concessionary discount is available, but not for quoted collections.
  • Use a private waste removal company or hire a skip.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current COVID-19 situation, a modified bulky waste collection service will be re-introduced from Monday 4 May 2020.

The service is being re-introduced to help residents dispose of excess waste which has accumulated during the current COVID-19 pandemic situation.

The service will offer a reduced range of items eligible for collection, this is to eliminate 2 person lifting and enable social distancing guidance to be followed.

All collections will be undertaken by a single operative, we must therefore restrict the eligible items to those that are manageable for one person, this excludes some items due to their weight, shape or size.

It is important to note that our employees must not enter a premises during the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents must ensure that any items are presented for collection at the edge of the property, as close to the roadside as possible without causing a hazard to pedestrians or vehicles. Doing this will help protect our staff and residents.

The key principle of this change to our bulky waste service is that we must ensure human health is protected, and social distancing is observed at all times by both staff and service users.

Do we recycle your bulky waste?

We try to recycle as much bulky waste as possible.

If, however, you fill plastic sacks with numerous items, there is no one to decide which items are recyclable and which aren’t.

If you would like your cans, plastic bottles, paper etc. to be recycled, then put these loose into your kerbside recycling bin.

How are bulky waste items disposed of in comparison to those I take to the tip myself?

Bulky waste from HWRCs (tips) is delivered to waste transfer stations where materials are sorted into suitable end destinations (i.e. recycling, energy from waste plant, or landfill). A greater degree of segregation is achieved with the bulky waste collection service as council staff are able to segregate white goods, TVs etc. from general bulky waste. This cannot be done to the same extent with skips from the HWRCs.

Our bulky waste collection service is designed for large items you would like to dispose of.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current COVID-19 situation, a modified bulky waste collection service will be re-introduced from Monday 4 May 2020.
