More than 50 organisations across Northumberland will be commemorating VE Day thanks to funding from the County Council.
The 80th anniversary of victory in Europe in will be commemorated nationally on May 8th through a national VE80 programme.
And to help communities mark the occasion, the County Council allocated £10,000 to create a special VE 80 Community Fund. The purpose was to enable non-profit making community and voluntary groups, schools, local charities, parish and town councils, and churches within Northumberland to apply for grant funding to help them to take part in celebratory events to mark the anniversary.
Over 50 organisations from across the county have been awarded grants of up to £250 towards refreshments and decorations for afternoon teas and street parties to mark the occasion. The full list of grant recipients can be found HERE.
Nigel Walsh, Director of Stronger Communities at Northumberland County Council, said: “It is fantastic to see so many community groups and organisations planning to commemorate VE80 throughout Northumberland.
“They play a vital role and bringing people together and these kind of local events are a great way of building vibrant and strong communities while also providing an opportunity to remember and reflect on the sacrifices of 80 years ago.”
