Libraries attend to the business of economic growth

Northumberland County Council has taken part in a national initiative to celebrate the important role libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities across the UK.
‘Libraries Change Lives Week’ was organised by CILIP (the Library and Information Association) and this year’s theme was “sustaining economic growth,” focusing on how libraries help create better, fairer economies by supporting people’s wellbeing, their careers and business success.
Northumberland County Councillor Wendy Pattison, Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, said: “While reading may be at the heart of the Library Service with a proven link to better wellbeing, lower levels of stress, loneliness and depression – there’s a lot more to it than that.
“Libraries are no longer just places to borrow books, they’re vibrant community hubs that offer a wide range of services, from digital access and business support to health and wellbeing resources.
“Libraries Change Lives Week highlighted how libraries support residents, businesses and communities to grow and succeed by helping them stay fit and well, get into work, grow skills and start or develop a business.
“A key part of this support is delivered through the Business & Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC) North East, which has successfully helped hundreds of people in the region - from those with a brilliant idea for a business, to start-ups or those looking to take their business to the next level.
“BIPC, which is funded by local councils including Northumberland offers expert guidance on topics such as Intellectual Property such as patents, trademarks and copyright, along with training and fully funded resources – and best of all it’s free!”
Local libraries play a crucial role in hosting and delivering this service. In Northumberland, BIPC drop-ins are held throughout the year Morpeth Library – (every Wednesday and Thursday) Hexham Library (first and third Friday of every month) and Alnwick Library (last Friday of the month).
Entrepreneurs and small business owners are also invited to attend the Midsummer Business Brunch an opportunity for networking and to discover more about BIPC on Wednesday, June 25 at Alnwick Playhouse.
