During Armed Forces Week Northumberland County Council hosted an Armed Forces Awareness Day to highlight the support that is available in Northumberland for veterans, reservists, serving personnel and their families.
The event took place last Thursday 26 June at South Beach in Blyth and provided support for members of the Armed Forces community who turned up on the day to seek help and advice.
There was lots of information available with representation from a whole range of organisations including the British Army Reserves, Walking with the Wounded, Age UK, Royal British Legion, Op Courage, Northumbria Police, SSAFA, Anxious Minds and the county council’s own Armed Forces and Veterans Outreach Workers.
There were also people present who could assist with issues such as mental health, housing and medical applications, employment support, benefits, as well as signposting and referring to other veteran organisations for further help.
Northumberland County Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Lyle Darwin said:
“We owe a duty of care to the men and women and all their families, who put their lives on the line for our safety and security and we understand they may face personal challenges after serving their country.
“At this event a number of serving and retired Armed Forces personnel came along for help and we were able to start putting the support in place to help them with their varying needs.”
