Council report recognises significant improvements

Positive report results are being hailed as a “Watershed” moment for Northumberland County Council.

The results from the Auditor’s Annual Report have been welcomed by the Council’s Audit Committee and emphasise a turning point for the organisation.

The report praises the great strides the Council has made since the Caller review, and the subsequent Corporate Peer Review with the most notable improvements being in its governance.

The report also commends the Council’s ambitious new Corporate Plan which focuses on achieving value for money, tackling inequalities and driving economic growth for Northumberland.

Additionally, the BEST programme for strategic change has been highlighted for the substantial progress being made in fostering a cultural shift within the Council, contributing to a more collaborative and efficient working environment.

Also recognised is the Council’s successful partnership work in launching the new Northumberland Line and progressing the Energy Central Learning Hub in Blyth, both of which are set to make a lasting impact on the region’s infrastructure and learning opportunities.

Northumberland County Council Leader, Cllr Glen Sanderson, said: “I’m very happy to see the outcome of this much anticipated report. The progress highlighted truly reflects the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our staff who have all worked tirelessly to bring about real, meaningful change and improvements for our communities.

This is a testament to the incredible progress being made together, but we know there is still work to be done. We remain committed to providing the very best services to our residents and will keep pushing forward, striving for even greater improvements.”

The Auditor’s Annual Report provides transparency and accountability of the Council’s financial health, compliance with regulations, and effectiveness of internal controls. The Council will use the findings within the report to make informed decisions about financial management and governance.
