Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham

Leisure centre improvements given the green light

A series of improvements have been agreed to keep the county’s leisure centres in peak condition.

A total of £1.3m in funding has been given the go-ahead for a range of repairs and modernisations at four of the County Council’s centres.

In Prudhoe, where a £1.6million improvement scheme is nearing completion at Waterworld, a further £180,000 is being set-aside for boiler replacement.

In Hexham, £500,000 will be spent in 2025-26 to carry out the replacement of the sports hall roof at Wentworth Leisure Centre.

Across in Alnwick a total of £600,000 is being invested in poolside electrical upgrade works and a new air handling unit at Willowburn Leisure Centre.

And at Ashington Leisure Centre, £50,000 will be spent replacing the tiles in the learner pool.

Gill O’Neill, Northumberland County Council’s Executive Director of Public Health, said: “We know that being active every day is good for our physical and mental health.

“The more time we spend being active, the greater the health benefits. Our leisure centres are a core component of enabling residents to achieve being active across the county.

“We’re very proud of them and it’s important we keep investing in their upkeep to keep them in good condition and safe and welcoming for all the residents who use them and the staff who work there.

“These range of repairs and improvements will ensure our centres continue to play a key role in improving people’s health and wellbeing.”
