The unveiling of the River Tweed Trail branding

River Tweed Trail branding unveiled

The new River Tweed Trail branding has been unveiled on the banks of the Tweed in the Scottish Borders.

The 113-mile, source-to-sea Trail will run from Moffat near the source of the Tweed, through the Scottish Borders and on to Berwick where the river meets the sea. It forms the centrepiece of the £25 million Destination Tweed river restoration project and is expected to be completed in 2028.

Monday’s event also included confirmation of £10 million in funding from the Scottish Government through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal for the Destination Tweed project.

In addition to the development of the River Tweed Trail, Destination Tweed also includes 12 cultural, river and landscape enhancement projects designed to preserve and enhance the river environment, share its stories with locals and visitors and create a world-class visitor attraction for the South of Scotland and north Northumberland.

Destination Tweed Project Director, Luke Fisher said; “We’re delighted that the new River Tweed Trail brand has now been unveiled. Its bold and impactful design celebrates the natural environment along the Tweed as well as the river’s connection to the communities, attractions and sites associated with the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage. We think it will have broad appeal and help us to showcase the Trail as a sustainable, world-class attraction that will provide a unique and enriching experience for locals and visitors alike.”

Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Promoting Healthy Lives at the County Council, added: "It is always a pleasure to be at this stunning part of our county to see progress on this fantastic project.

"It is great to formally welcome the latest Borderlands funding as we work towards completion of the River Tweed Trail in the coming years. The health and wellbeing benefits of being out and enjoying the great outdoors is well-known, and this will be yet another reason for residents and visitors to come to North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders."

Destination Tweed is being led by Tweed Forum. Other partners involved in the project are Scottish Borders Council, Northumberland County Council, Dumfries and Galloway Council, South of Scotland Enterprise, Sustrans, Southern Uplands Partnership, Buglife, Borders Forest Trust, Tweedsmuir Community Company, SEPA, VisitScotland and NatureScot as well as landowners along the river.

Destination Tweed is supported by over 30 funders. The project received £10 million as part of the Borderlands Growth Deal, with major funding also coming from South of Scotland Enterprise, The National Lottery Heritage Fund – thanks to National Lottery players, Sustrans, Northumberland County Council, EU Life, the Fallago Environment Fund and a range of Trusts and Foundations.
