New signage is now in place after outline planning application was submitted for the former Hexham Middle School site to be redeveloped as a high-quality residential community.
The sign at the entrance gives details of how the future site could look, as well as details of how interested companies can get involved with the procurement process.
The public can access the outline application via the Northumberland public access planning website (using ref 24/03778/OUT). Further consultation will take place in the future when a development partner is on board and more detailed plans emerge for the site.
The application will seek to secure more affordable housing than is required by planning policy. It also includes a long-term “design code” for the site, setting out how every element of the new homes and buildings on the site will complement the character and quality of this scheme.
This design code also helps set out how the refurbishment of historic buildings on the site can be sympathetically bought into new uses.
In parallel with this technical work, the Council remains in dialogue with a number of potential development partners who will help the delivery of specific elements of this scheme, such as the residential extra care unit. The selected partners will be confirmed in due course.
Northumberland County Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: "I'm pleased that the sign is up as it marks another step in this exciting project.
"The County Council has chosen to develop the site, subject to planning, to offer a wide range of housing tailored to meet different local needs, rather that just sell it off to the highest bidder.
"We're looking forward to continuing to work with residents and partners as we move forward and are confident that in the future this site will be a real flagship for the town.”
