Fire crew raise over £3,400 with epic charity walk

A team from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service have walked the full 84 miles of Hadrian’s Wall in one go in an epic charity challenge.

Dave Stevenson, Dave Habberjam, Graeme Gowland, Megan Coburn and Matty Robson from Allendale's retained fire crew, along with Deputy Chief Fire Officer Graeme Binning, walked day and night (and then another day) to raise funds for The Firefighters Charity.

To date they have raised over £3,400 and the total is still climbing.

Along the way, they were helped by crews from Cumbria, Hexham and Tyne and Wear, as well as friends and family, who provided refreshments and moral support, even joining them for some sections of the coast-to-coast walk.

Northumberland Fire Authority Chair, Councillor Colin Horncastle said: “Completing this challenge is an incredible achievement and demonstrates the dedication and determination that our fire crews show every day.”

The team posted the highs and lows of the journey on social media, including reaching the iconic Sycamore Gap in pitch darkness, contending with blisters and exhaustion, and finally a warm welcome back in Allendale by the local community.

DCFO Graeme Binning said: “To be part of such a special group of people and undertake such an epic challenge to raise vital funds for The Firefighters Charity is personally and professionally something I will hold dear for a very long time.

“Everyone involved in the preparation, support, sponsorship and success of the mission have demonstrated the very best in humanity and everyone should be proud of their contribution to such a special once in a lifetime event.”
