With Halloween fast approaching, Northumberland Fire and Rescue is raising awareness of the risks that come with the festivities and how to prevent them. 
 

Parents and carers are being reminded of how important it is to be aware of their children’s costumes, which can be made from flammable material. Those who are wearing costumes with flowing ropes and capes are at the most risk when a fire spreads. 
 

Halloween costumes can often ignite and burn at a fast pace. It is important to buy from a reputable source and in the case of children's costumes, check before purchasing that they are correctly labelled with the UKCA/CE mark, warnings, instructions and age suitability.  Consumers shopping online are advised to buy from a website based in the UK, to ensure that the costume complies with domestic safety standards. 
 

The use of naked flames to light up carved pumpkins can also pose a risk of getting out of control. LED candles are much safer and look just as good. 
 

Chief Fire Officer Paul Hedley said: “We want children and their families to enjoy Halloween, but we want them to do so safely. We’re urging parents to swap dangerous naked flames in decorations and lanterns for battery operated lights which are much safer, and to take notice of the materials that their children’s costumes are made from. 
 

“Awareness and education is so important in prevention against fires.”  
 

Scary cakes and bakes are always fun to make during the Halloween period. Make sure to always accompany your children in the kitchen to minimise risk and limit distractions. Remember to switch off all appliances if you need to leave the kitchen.
