Northumberland Skills Construction Campus

Council invests in Northumberland’s talent pipeline

More young people in Northumberland are kickstarting their careers in key growth sectors thanks to the council’s investment in vocational training facilities across the county.

Northumberland Skills’ revamped Construction Campus in Seghill welcomed students in September and work is underway on a £1.4m state-of-the-art Fabrication and Welding Training Centre in Port of Blyth to complement the £11m Energy Central Learning Hub development.

The facilities are creating more opportunities for residents and businesses to upskill with qualifications covering in-demand construction trades, such as electrical installation and plastering, industry standard welding and fabrication processes and skills associated with the clean energy sector.

Cllr Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “Matching skills with the needs of industry is key to the council’s economic vision, along with access to training close to home and opportunities to work in rewarding and sustainable roles.

These vocational training facilities will enable our residents to gain the knowledge, skills and experience to capitalise on the growth of these key sectors and expand the talent pool for our local businesses.”

The council is committed to making sure residents have access to learning close to home with the Northumberland Skills team based in schools and community venues across the county offering courses and apprenticeships in a supportive environment.

Many of the courses are free and there are also opportunities for online, flexible learning that can fit around other commitments.

Audrey Kingham, Joint Interim Director of Children’s Services and Director of Education and Skills, said: “Northumberland Skills offers courses in a wide range of subjects to young people and adults in their local communities, so that they can learn a new skill, gain confidence and develop their careers.

“Construction and Engineering are two of the region’s key priority sectors. These vocational facilities will enable us to maximise the opportunities available for our residents and build closer links with our businesses.”
