A sign saying NEWS. The council has welcomed the recent review into its governance

Progress well underway after recent review

Ahead of this week’s meeting to discuss the recent governance review of the local authority, the leader of Northumberland County Council is reassuring residents that progress on its recommendations is already well underway.

It comes after the administration commissioned an external corporate governance review of the Council to highlight areas for improvement, provide learning points and give an opportunity for it to adapt and change the way in which it does business.

Council Leader Cllr Glen Sanderson said: “I specifically asked for this review when first becoming the Leader of this administration in May 2021 and using my delegated powers the report was eventually commissioned.

“There were no great surprises in the report as I've been well aware of issues for some time and while I am pleased the administration was not by and large criticised - it is clear we would need to take swift action.
“Very soon after the last full council meeting finished I had chaired a cross-party group of councillors to address some of the issues raised and plan our next steps.

“The importance of working together was made clear by Max Caller and his team and that’s precisely what we’re doing.

“We now have a draft action plan which will be shared with all members so we can consider the way forward at our next full council meeting on June 21.
“And while we’re working on the recommendations in the report I want to stress again this council is performing excellently across its services and I remain very proud of all our staff and the work they do for residents day in, day out.

“The relationship between members and officers is infinitely better now and I have great confidence in how we will move forward."
