Drop-in events at Berwick Maltings

Drop-in events have been organised for people to find out more about plans to relocate activities from Berwick Maltings to the town’s Barracks.

Northumberland County Council and the Maltings (Berwick) Trust are working together to deliver a new venue for Berwick on the current Maltings Eastern Lane site.

The new Maltings venue will be an iconic, multi-purpose cultural and entertainment complex, transforming the appeal of Berwick-upon-Tweed as an attractive, high quality visitor destination, as well as offering significantly enhanced facilities for local residents and artists.

While works are undertaken on the new venue between 2023 and 2025, the County Council, together with The Maltings (Berwick) Trust and English Heritage, are proposing that two existing buildings at Berwick Barracks will be refurbished and remodelled to allow the Trust to continue delivering its programme and accommodate their audiences temporarily.

The proposed development includes:

The redevelopment of the ‘Mobilisation Store’ to provide a 114-seat, sound-proofed, temporary cinema facility.

The Maltings already use the Gymnasium Space as a Gallery. The proposal seeks the renovation of the ‘Gymnasium’ and attached store buildings, to create a venue that can host a wider range of cultural events, as well as providing enhanced exhibition and education space all year round.

It is anticipated that the Gymnasium will remain as a small-scale year-round cultural venue beyond 2025. While focusing principally on high quality visual arts exhibitions during the day, the refurbished space’s versatility will allow additional talks, workshops and other site-specific events to take place on an ad hoc basis through the year.

The redevelopment of the Mobilisation Store will facilitate the decant of the current Berwick Maltings site to allow redevelopment of the theatre. It is envisaged that it would be used for approximately 2-3 years, if completed in 2023.

When it is no longer required as a cinema, the intention would be for the building to become a permanent strongroom archive storage facility for the County Council.

The drop-in events are scheduled for:
Saturday 2nd July from 10am to 1pm - The Maltings, Eastern Lane
Thursday 7th July from 5pm to 7.30pm - The Maltings, Eastern Lane
