War veteran visits Fire Service

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service were honoured to host a 101-year old war veteran and former firefighter this week.

Jeffrey Brereton, who joined the Royal Air Force before starting his career by enrolling in the National Fire Service in 1946 was visiting his grandson – Rob Sanders, who is also a firefighter at Pegswood station.

Rob said his grandad was his inspiration to join the service.

He said: As soon as I got in the fire service I told my grandad and his first words were – ‘I'm so excited can I come and visit and look round’?

“I’ve always wanted to follow in his footsteps and I’m so very proud that I am a firefighter with Northumberland Fire and Rescue. I’m hoping my career is as successful as his. And I’m looking forward to enjoying more training and gaining more experience and knowledge.”

Chief Fire Officer, Paul Hedley said: “What an absolute pleasure it's been for us to host Jeff and his family at Northumberland FRS headquarters during his visit to the county to see his grandson.

“As soon as you meet Jeff it's clear that he's a truly remarkable man who, even at 101, has an amazing zest for life, is full of fabulous stories and anecdotes and who is still dedicated to helping others through his charitable work with the RAF Association.”

Jeff spent his career with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue and before retiring in January 1981 he was Assistant Chief Fire Officer at their brigade headquarters.

Prior to his firefighting career Jeff served with the RAF where he maintained with Hawker Hurricane plane and to this day his is one of very few  left flying since the Battle of Britain.
