The Britishvolt site at Cambois. The Government has pledged funding for it this week

Council welcomes Britishvolt funding announcement

The council has welcomed news an "in principle offer of support" has been sent to Britishvolt in Cambois.

Speaking in the House of Comms today the Prime Minister confirmed that an "in principle offer of support" for funding was sent to the company last night (July 5).

The gigafactory site is being prepared at the former coal yards of the old Blyth Power Station and is set to provide 3,000 jobs directly on the site and up to 5,000 more in the plant’s supply chain.

Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: “This is very welcome news from the Prime Minister, confirming Government commitments to funding towards this amazing scheme.

“Britishvolt will be such a major boost to employment and the future economy not just of the immediate area but the county and the wider region.

“We look forward to construction starting soon and the plant opening in the coming years.”

The company acquired the site in April 2021 and secured planning permission from the county council for what will be the fourth largest building in the UK. The company will start the main construction process this year.

The project will be built in phases to keep up with technological advances, but Britishvolt is aiming to have a total capacity of over 30GWh - producing batteries for more than 300,000 electric vehicles a year - by the end of the decade.
