Could you volunteer to be a Hexham heritage tour guide?

Residents with a love for Hexham are being asked to consider joining a team of volunteers who will be trained to lead heritage tours around the town.

Northumberland County Council is seeking individuals who are passionate about Hexham and have a positive and friendly personality - as part of a project aimed at educating residents and visitors about the rich history of the town.

The project is being led by Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone and training for the heritage guides will be provided by Historic England.
The tour guides will be using the Digital Heritage Trail already provided by the HSHAZ and available from ‘Trailtale’, as a basis to lead small tour groups around Hexham’s Conservation Area.

Northumberland County Councillor, Jeff Watson, cabinet member with responsibility for culture said:
“Volunteering is a great way to give something back to the town and be part of a fantastic team.  This new guided tour around a beautiful, historic town will be a learning opportunity and enhance the visitor experience to Hexham. I’d recommend it to anyone with a love of heritage and meeting people.

“If leading a tour isn’t for you but you would like to be involved and can offer administrative or IT support please get in touch as the team will also require help taking bookings, allocating guides and maintaining a social media presence.”

If you are able to offer at least one 2 hours per month on average between the beginning of April and the end of September and would like to volunteer, please contact peter.mawer@northumberland.gov.uk.

If there is sufficient interest to form the Team, guide training will be arranged for the Autumn ready for tours to begin 1 April 2022.
