Gain the skills you need in 2022 by building your future through an apprenticeship.

Northumberland County Council is currently recruiting over fifty apprentices across a variety of service areas, opening up opportunities for anyone looking to upskill or start a new career.  

Whether you have recently left school, looking for employment or aspire to start a completely new career, an apprenticeship could be just what you need.

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week (Monday 7 – 13 February) the county council will be holding a virtual event and online activities to give you the opportunity to find out more.

National Apprenticeship Week is a chance for prospective apprentices to find out more about upcoming roles, hear from current apprentices and speak with the team for advice and guidance on next steps.

Councillor Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member with responsibility for corporate services, said: “It is important for us as a council to invest in our homegrown talent.

“By investing in apprentices, we are investing in our county, giving those who want to learn and do the best for the county they live and work in the chance to do so.

“An apprenticeship offers on the job experience and great learning opportunities. The team here are committed to ensuring that all apprentices get the best experience to reach their career aspirations, and I urge anyone who is thinking about a change or looking to gain new skills to get in touch with them.”

The apprenticeship programme offers apprenticeships from entry to degree level and provides the opportunity to develop skills and experiences while working towards achieving nationally recognised qualifications.

Former apprentice Jonathan Hall went from apprentice to employed within four months at the council, he said: “Having an apprenticeship with Northumberland County Council has given me many opportunities and I’ve learnt many skills.”

Having started as a Level 2 Highways Maintenance Skilled apprentice at the council in autumn 2020, Jonathan said: “It was thanks to a lot of hard work and commitment I was successful in getting a full-time position.”

Apprenticeships aren’t just a way to earn a living whilst gaining a qualification, they can provide a stepping stone to a whole new career.

The council has welcomed over 1,000 apprentices over the years, with many finding full-time positions within the authority and others moving on to further their careers with other organisations, but all joined by the fact it was their apprenticeships that boosted their careers.
A virtual event is being held on Wednesday 9 February at the following times:

• 10am – 12noon
• 1pm – 3pm
• 5pm – 7 pm
