31/1 5.15pm Teams continue work to restore power

Agencies have continued to work together to support residents still without power following the weekend’s storms.

Latest information shows there are now under 1,000 properties without power in Northumnerland following Storm Malik and the majority of homes have had supplies restored.

The council has been working alongside Northern Powergrid, Northumbria Police and local communities to ensure the county’s most vulnerable residents are cared for and people without power can get hot food and warmth if needed.

Northern Powergrid has drafted in extra support staff from other areas and is continuing its restoration efforts. Worst affected areas were the north and south-west of the county, with further pockets elsewhere.

Residents are encouraged to look in on their neighbours and if anyone has a concern about a vulnerable resident or a safeguarding issue, they should ring Onecall: 01670 536400

The council has been liaising with local communities and NPG to make available locations for the provision of hot food and drink, a warm place to meet and electrical charging facilities.

Operational work to clear debris and assess structural damage will continue over the coming days. All road closures are now cleared although drivers must still take extra care on the roads.

County Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: "Once again the people of Northumberland have come together to look after each other in what has been a challenging time.

“We know some of the communities affected over the weekend are those that suffered during Storm Arwen before Christmas, although damage has not been on the same scale.

However, our thoughts are with everyone who has lost power or suffered damage to their homes or property.”

Our teams and Northern Powergrid have been working around the clock, as have lots of other agencies, since the latest storm, and will continue to do so until all power is back on.”

Northern Powergrid is directing residents to their website – northernpowergrid.com - to receive updates and report a power cut and it has teams available 24/7 by calling 105.
