Celebrating inspirational women this International Women’s Day

Women across Northumberland are being celebrated on Monday March 8 as part of International Women’s Day.
The theme for this year’s day is ‘Choose to Challenge’ – calling out gender bias and inequality and seeking out and celebrating women's achievements. As part of this Northumberland County Council and partner organisations are pulling together to create a virtual service to mark the day.
Councillor Wendy Pattison, portfolio holder for equality and diversity said: “Women have long struggled for equality and that continues in some areas, but here in Northumberland we continue to see more and more women breaking the mould and the perception of gender bias and inequality.
It is extremely important that we continue to recognise the importance of equality and teach our children and young people why equality matters at the earliest opportunity.”
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity, brings together a celebration of women's achievements and raise awareness about women’s equality.
Daljit Lally, Chief Executive of Northumberland County Council said: “We are proud to have a strong leadership, political representation and workforce of women here at the council and across our partner organisations in Northumberland. It shows what can be achieved and helps to break down gender bias.
In a year where we have all been challenged, I hope women are proud of themselves for what they have already achieved and are inspired to challenge and to go for what they aspire in life.”
To celebrate the day locally inspirational women, children and young people from across Northumberland will be taking part in a virtual celebration as part of the day which will be shared on Northumberland’s social media channels.
Those watching will hear from inspirational women working in and with local government talking about the people who have inspired them, and how they too hope to inspire the next generation.
Schools across the county have also got involved by taking part in a number of competitions ranging from art, poetry and storytelling to get children and young people speaking about the day, what they have learnt and the women that they feel inspired by.
