Fire at Kyloe Woods, North Northumberland

Update at 21:15 on Friday 4 June:

The intensity of the fire incident has reduced significantly, due to the lowering temperatures and the fantastic efforts of all the crews involved.

The fire is now known to have covered an area of 71,000m2 

As darkness approaches fire and rescue resources will be downscaled, and one crew remaining overnight, and they will reassess for any hot spots in the area in the morning.


At 17:00 on Friday 4 June:

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service is currently dealing with a wildfire in Kyloe Woods, just off the C18 road, in North Northumberland. 

The service received a call at 12:07 to reports of a fire in Kyloe Woods  
 
There are currently six fire engines, two 4x4 units and 38 personnel in attendance from both Northumberland and Scottish Fire & Rescue Service.  A drone mobile is also being used to assist with operations.
 
The Mountain Rescue service and Northumbria Police are also assisting in the wider area.
 
The fire has currently affected an area approximately 40,000m2.
 
It is not known how the fire started, but an investigation will be carried out to determine the cause.
 
The fire service anticipates that the incident will continue for some hours, and urges members of the the public to stay away from the area at this time.
 
Stephen Kennedy, Emergency Response Group Manager at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: “This fire only serves to demonstrate how quickly fires can develop in dry conditions in wooded or heathland areas.

“They can cause considerable damage to our wildlife and natural environment which can take many years to recover from a wildfire.

“We continually urge everyone to be wildfire alert, respect the Countryside Code and please don’t light fires and barbeques.

“We ask that members of the public stay away from the Kyloe Woods area at this time.”
