Residents are being asked to take particular care this weekend following concerns about icy conditions on untreated surfaces.
Council teams have been working around the clock over recent days – carrying out gritting and also snow clearing on high ground, for example around Allendale and areas of the west of the county.
Significant efforts are being made to salt primary and secondary routes and the priority footways in and around the town centres, but despite ongoing best efforts, residents are still urged to take particular care on pavements especially those in residential areas which it won’t be possible to treat.
Grit bins are being replenished as fast as is possible and residents are advised to report any that are empty via the Council’s on-line reporting facility at

Cllr Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council said: “We have as many resources as possible out in areas across the county and are doing as much as we possibly can to keep surfaces clear and safe.
“We urge people to only go out if absolutely necessary – and if it is, to take great care. It is very important to avoid dangers such as slips and falls, which would not only cause personal difficulties, but also put more pressure on our already stretched NHS.”
