Firefighters kick off charity football match
26 Aug 2021
Firefighters from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service went head-to-head in their first footballing derby at the weekend to raise money for charity.
The match was held on Sunday 22 August at Morpeth Town AFC’s ground and saw Pegswood Community Fire Station go up against West Hartford Community Fire Station.
Firefighter Keith Cowell who organised the event said it was a great way to bring the community and fire service together and raise money for The Firefighters Charity.
He said: "This event brought a lot of people together and forged great links with the community and the local football club.
“I see great benefits for both parties to hold this event on an annual basis. A big success for people, community, morale and The Firefighters Charity.
“A huge thank you to all that have helped make this game a success including local companies donating to the cause - and of course to Morpeth Town F.C. and their chairman Ken Beattie without whom this day could not have taken place.”
Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Graeme Binning, who played in the match said:
“This was an amazing day to be a part of and demonstrated the very best of Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service.
“To bring colleagues, friends and families for what was a great event has laid the foundation for next year’s match and other similar events”
