Winter Reading Challenge

Be a reading hero this winter with Northumberland Libraries

This winter children are being encouraged to join the Winter Mini Reading Challenge and discover the pleasure of reading over the Christmas holidays.

Following the success of the Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge Northumberland Libraries is once again joining with The Reading Agency for this annual event, which this year has an “Everyone is a hero” theme.

Children will be encouraged to join the challenge by signing up online at www.wintermini.org.uk and setting themselves a reading challenge, the recommended number is three books, and posting a review of the books they read on the challenge website.

This year The Reading Agency has teamed up with children’s publisher Knights Of to bring you the Everyone Is A Hero reading challenge, where you’ll meet characters from Knights and Bikes, High-Rise Mystery, and the Run series.

The challenge will run from December 1 to January 15. There will be a host of fun activities, videos and reading recommendations, plus an exciting competition on the challenge website.

Northumberland Libraries will also be sharing lots of fun activities and book recommendations on their Facebook page.

Children and families can use the Select and Collect service, which is available at most libraries, to select their favourite books or they can access them online via the digital library. Children can also collect a Christmas Activity Bag from their local library which will contain lucky dip Christmas books, a craft activity booklet and other surprises (Subject tavailability – please call your library ahead or book online via Select & Collect) .

Cllr Jeff Watson, cabinet member for the library service at Northumberland County Council said: “It is well known that children’s reading habits can see a dip over the school holidays, and due to the disruption to education as a result of Covid 19, this year it is even more important than ever that we support children and continue their reading experience over Christmas.

“The Winter Reading Challenge is a fun way for children and their parents to enjoy reading together and we hope that lots of families will become reading heroes this winter.”
