Home learning pack for parents of under 5s

The council’s early years team has pulled together a weekly home learning pack for the parents of under 5s.

While children are not able to access their education at nursery, school or with their childminder, the council wants to support parents to continue to get under 5s ready for school.

The resources in the weekly pack will include ideas for simple, play-based activities to try together at home and each week a new set of activities will be released, along with bonus videos and resources.

The first pack gives some top tips to make sure that this is both manageable and fun for parents and children, including: trying to keep to a routine; letting children lead the learning; spending a little bit of time outside; and sharing stories every day.

For week 1 of ‘Learning together at home’, the team is sharing details of a new free Northumberland School Ready app and guidance on how to access this.  The app includes a selection of simple and free activities that parents can use at home to support their child's learning and development.

The team has also provided links to other easily accessible online resources.

Cllr Wayne Daley, deputy leader and cabinet member for children's services at Northumberland County Council said:  "Our children's services teams are working very hard to support parents and families during the closure of schools and nursery settings.

“This weekly pack will help families of under 5s support their pre-school education during this difficult time."

The first week’s pack can be found here.
