Businesses across Northumberland are being encouraged to sign up to a public pact to ensure lifelong practical backing for our armed forces and their families.

The plea is being made by Northumberland County Council to mark Armed Forces Day (Saturday 27 June).

The authority has been recognised as one of the best in the UK for showing outstanding support for members of the armed forces community.

In 2018 it received the prestigious Gold award by the Ministry of Defence in its Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme.

Now it wants every business in the county to sign up to the covenant. This is a promise by the nation to ensure that those who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Signing the covenant means that businesses are supporting employees as reservists and veterans. They can choose specific promises or pledges to support their employees within the armed forces community.

Northumberland County Councillor Gordon Castle, Veteran Champion said:
“We would like to encourage all Northumberland employers, large or small, who have employees with armed forces connections, or those who wish to consider how they can be part of the armed forces covenant family, to sign up. We owe a duty to all those men and women and all their families, who put their lives on the line for our safety, prosperity and security.”

Northumberland County Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Jeff Watson said:
“Unfortunately this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have been unable to hold any public events to mark Armed Forces Week,  however our support for our armed forces community remains as strong and as resolute as ever.

“During Armed Forces week the county council will  be proudly flying the  Armed Forces flag outside County Hall in Morpeth to pay tribute to the brave men and women who served and continue to serve  our country, facing conflict and uncertainty in war zones across the globe.”

“In these recent  times of national crises, we have seen close to hand, the invaluable role our Armed Forces have played  in supporting Northumberland communities and the Government in its response to the pandemic.”
