Northumberland County Council is encouraging residents, workplace representatives and community and voluntary groups to sign up to become Northumberland Community Champions.

The network of new Northumberland Community Champions will help to share the latest government advice and coronavirus guidance with their local community, friends and family, in their workplaces and on social media, to help others stay safe during the ongoing pandemic and reduce the spread of the virus.

They will receive regular updates to keep them fully informed of the latest guidance and the support available for vulnerable residents.
Anyone can volunteer - They don’t need any specific experience and will not have to give up a lot of time, they simply need a willingness to get involved.

Cllr Veronica Jones, Cabinet member for Adults’ Wellbeing at Northumberland County Council said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people across the county to help us in the battle against the virus.

"Their support will be key in helping to spread accurate information,
myth busting and ultimately keep people safe.  I am delighted we are introducing this opportunity for our communities – you could say I am Championing our Champions!

It is really important that we work together in this battle; the pandemic has not gone away.  We need everyone to #doyourbit and remember, protect yourself, protect others, protect Northumberland.

Liz Morgan, Director of Public Health at Northumberland County Council said: “We know residents in Northumberland are already playing their part by social distancing, wearing face coverings, washing their hands and getting tested when unwell. But Covid is still with us.  It is still a very serious health issue for vulnerable people in our communities and NHS services are getting very busy.  This is an opportunity for people to get involved in helping to keep their family, friends and relatives safe.

“As well as sharing messages around the latest guidance to combat Covid, we really want to hear feedback from our champions. We want to know how the pandemic has affected specific communities and will welcome suggestions of how we can do things better – it’s very much a two-way process.”
