Remember to follow safety guidance when travelling

Residents in Northumberland are being reminded that restrictions are in place in other parts of the country where there are particularly high numbers of cases of Covid-19 and that they should think carefully before visiting them.

As lockdown has eased and the summer holidays are in full flow, residents have started to travel outside of the county to enjoy staycations in other parts of the country, as well as travelling abroad. This includes areas where there are much
higher numbers of Covid-19 cases than Northumberland.

Checking what restrictions are in place before travelling and paying extra care to maintain a 2m distance, washing hands frequently and the use of face coverings will help in preventing Covid-19 outbreaks in Northumberland.

Liz Morgan, Director of Public Health at Northumberland County Council, said: “Even though the number of cases in Northumberland remains low, we mustn’t forget that we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. Travelling to places with a much
higher number of cases means there is an increased risk of catching the virus because there's
more around.

“Because of this, people should make an extra effort to comply with the guidance around social distancing, handwashing and use of face coverings. To reduce the risk of transmission, it is also really important to wear a face covering when travelling
in a car or taxi, if it is with people who are not household members.

“Residents should be extra vigilant when looking out for symptoms, however mild, ensuring that they self isolate and get tested, as well as responding to NHS Test and Trace if positive, or if contact traced.

“We all need to do our bit in the battle against Covid. Protect yourself, protect others, and protect Northumberland.”

The main symptoms of Covid-19 are a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.
