Learn how to re-set your health with the PHE Better Health campaign

Residents and visitors in Northumberland are being encouraged to seize the moment and reset their health, with an initial focus on healthy weight.

In support of the new PHE ‘Better Health - Let’s do this’ campaign, Northumberland County Council is highlighting the importance of staying fit and healthy.

The new national PHE campaign encourages people who are overweight to get their health back on track with the introduction of a new 12-week weight loss plan app which includes a healthy weight calculator, weekly plan and progress diary.

Liz Morgan, Director of Public Health at Northumberland County Council, said: “Staying fit and healthy means we have more strength to fight off diseases and that we’re less vulnerable to cancer, heart disease and now COVID-19.

“It is important we all do everything we can to help our fitness and taking control of our weight is a key part of this.  Even though the number of cases in Northumberland remains low, we mustn’t forget that we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, so looking after our fitness as well as wearing a mask, washing out hands and socially distancing are crucial to the battle.”

Cllr Veronica Jones, cabinet member for adult wellbeing and health, said: “Now is the perfect time to get active, eat better and drink a little less. PHE has confirmed that being overweight puts you at greater risk of serious illness or even death from Covid-19, so now is the perfect time to make a positive change.

“It’s really important we all do our bit in the battle against Covid, and remember: Protect yourself, protect others, and protect Northumberland.”

Northumberland County Council commissions an NHS Integrated Wellbeing Service, whose Health Trainers can support people to stay healthy and prevent illness by giving advice and support on healthy food choices, weight management, increasing physical activity, stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake.

They will work with anyone aged 16 and over who is working, living, or educated in Northumberland.  One to one appointments and group work sessions are available for up to 12 weeks to support clients with a personal health plan.  This is a free service and referrals are accepted from all health professionals or clients can directly contact the service.
