Next week (17- 22 Aug) is Love Culture Week, and Northumberland families are being invited to take part in a local treasure hunt to help them find out more about what’s available in their area.

Love Culture week is organised by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to highlight; museums, galleries, heritage sites, libraries, cinemas and cultural organisations, big and small, across the UK.

To help residents explore culture in their community Northumberland Libraries are inviting families to take part in a Silly Squad themed treasure hunt in their local area.

Cllr Cath Homer, cabinet member for Culture, Arts, Leisure and Tourism said: “Love Culture Week is an excellent opportunity to explore the culture available to us here in Northumberland.

“We are encouraging families to take time out to explore their own locality and joining in with a Silly Squad Treasure Hunt is the perfect way to discover what our local towns have to offer.”

Libraries in Alnwick, Amble, Berwick, Blyth, Hexham, Morpeth, Prudhoe and Widdrington have teamed up with local businesses to display Silly Squad characters in their windows and children will need to visit each one to find where the special Silly Squad characters are.

Activity sheets are available at participating libraries or online at www.mylibrary.co.uk. Completed treasure hunt sheets can be dropped off at libraries or emailed to mylibrary@northumberland.gov.uk for a chance to win a prize.

The Silly Squad and its characters are part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, a programme of activities and online events to encourage children to enjoy reading this summer.

Silly Squad Summer Reading Challenge can be completed online at https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk or physical packs are available to pick up from libraries offering a Select and Collect service. Books can be ordered by phone or by visiting the Northumberland Libraries website.
