Refurbished Wentworth boasts one of the best gyms in the north east

A fantastic new state-of the art gym installed in Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham, is one of the best equipped in the north east and it opens to the public today (Monday 30).

The new gym forms part of major refurbishment scheme that has also seen the centre’s  changing areas upgraded and a newly designed modern reception and cafe area.

The gym has been designed to be used by all members of the community - from those just beginning their exercise journey, through to performance athletes competing at the highest level.

It incorporates a functional training and free weights area, group Wattbike cycling, and a group exercise training area, plus interactive areas providing sports club, group and individual training opportunities. There is also cardiovascular and resistance equipment for individual users.

The reception area has been re-designed to be more interactive and welcoming and self service pods introduced for those who wish to use them.

The cafe area has also been refurbished to provide a new customer experience  with new furniture and a new layout. There is now a new menu which has been developed with the assistance of a professional chef, offering  healthy homemade local produce, and a new food and beverage offer as well as a traditional cafe offer and a grab and go service.

The £698,000 funding for the refurbishment has been financed by Northumberland County Council as part of an ambitious £65 million countywide investment programme to upgrade and transform sport and leisure facilities and to enhance the customer experience. This includes the building of new leisure centres in Berwick, Morpeth and Ponteland and major investment to refurbish and revitalise centres in Blyth and in Hexham.

County Councillor Cath Homer, local ward member and cabinet member with responsibility for leisure said:

“ The centre now has a fresh and modern feel to it and a gym that is one of the best equipped in the north east.

“ This investment  is a fantastic boost for Hexham and has provided first class exercise facilities and services that will help enhance the health and wellbeing of our local community.”

During the refurbishment work the existing  gym equipment was relocated into the sports hall so that members could continue with their fitness regimes with minimal inconvenience.

Mark Tweedie, Chief Executive of Active Northumberland, the leisure trust that manages the centre said:

“ Active Northumberland is working to transform the way it provides leisure services, with an increased focus on participation for all and improving health and wellbeing.

“ The refurbishment work that has taken place at Wentworth  aims to provide a new and welcoming customer experience and great facilities for all residents, whatever their age or fitness level.”

“ We have tried to keep disruption to a minimum and to get the work done as quickly as possible and I’d like to thank all our customers for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out.”
