Visitors to this weekend’s Northumberland County Show will be able to taste, touch and see for themselves what’s Great about the county.

Northumberland County Council’s Great Northumberland marquee will give visitors the chance to try Northumbrian delicacies from Produced in Northumberland producers, as well as having a go at Hoverball Archery.

There will be lots of activities to help promote the Discover our Land campaign which aims to promote Northumberland as a great place to live, work, visit and invest.Youngsters will be able to take part in a special Discover our Land treasure trail around the showfield, collecting stamps from other partners including The Alnwick Garden; Hexham Racecourse; Ferguson’s Transport; Northumberland Cheese Company; Forestry England and Northumberland College. There’ll be a small prize for all completed trails.

Visitors will also have the chance to explore the wild and ever-changing Northumberland landscape through their own VR hand-set. There is also a special Discover our Land competition where visitors could be in with a chance of winning a 3 night stay for 4 at Clear Sky Park Lodges, Kielder; two tickets for any race meeting at Hexham Racecourse and a 12-month family pass for The Alnwick Garden.

Children will also be able to meet the Tiger from The Tiger who Came to Tea in person, shake his paw and enjoy stories and activities in the storytelling tent within the marquee. The Tiger will be appearing on the hour throughout the day  from 10 - 3 with stories at 15 minutes past each hour. Children will also have the chance to make their own tiger masks to take home.

If you fancy heading on a journey through the universe join the North Pennines Planetarium on an immersive experience which will take you to infinity and beyond, touring our solar system.  There will be eight sessions running throughout the day, which are limited to 25 people per session. These sessions can be booked on a first come, first serve basis on the day at the Great Northumberland marquee.

Fancy challenging yourself to a sprint-rowing challenge? Active Northumberland Sprint Indoor Rowing competition with the fastest adult and child winning a 1-month free membership with Active Northumberland.

One of the council’s new fleet of gritters will be on display and Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service will also be there with a fire engine and Swift water rescue vehicle.

There will also be stalls from a number of council services including Northumberland Archives; Produced in Northumberland and Education & Skills; as well as tourism attractions across the county including Northumberland National Park and Hadrian’s Wall.

There will also be cooking demonstrations from Discover our Land campaign supporter Martin Charlton from The Old Boat House Group and the BBC’s Red sofa will be on hand for visitors to take part in a number of interactive games as part of their BBC Tours stand.

Cllr Cath Homer, cabinet member for culture, arts and leisure at the council, said: “Northumberland County Show attracts more than 23,000 people every year from both within the county and outside, so it was really important for us to be part of this fantastic family event.

“The Great Northumberland marquee will help us to tell the story of this amazing county. We will be showcasing all the exciting things on offer, whether that’s finding out more about the Discover our Land campaign or taking advantage of one of the many council services or activities.”
