Blyth renews partnership to go greener and cleaner

Blyth Town Council and Northumberland County Council will work together in a new five-year partnership to bring the highest environmental standards to the town.

The Neighbourhood Services Partnership Agreement will run from April 2019 to March 2024, building on the considerable success of its existing scheme.

Over the past five years the existing agreement has significantly improved grounds maintenance standards in Blyth, driving up local environmental quality in the town and its streets and open spaces.

Now the new agreement will take this relationship a stage further, with more cleaning of ‘hotspot’ areas 7 days a week.

The new agreement includes grass in public areas being cut up to 19 times a year, increased street cleaning and litter collections, work on floral displays around the town and regular weed control.

All the staff work as part of an integrated team and are able to do much more together.  In addition to extra grounds maintenance work being done in the winter, having the larger team also means that during bad weather teams can clear more snow or ice on pedestrian routes to shops and schools.

Blyth Town Council Mayor, Councillor Adrian Cartie said: “Blyth Town Council have been working closely with the County Council over the last six months to look at various options for a new Neighbourhood Services contract  which in the main includes grounds maintenance and street cleansing, and we are very happy with the final outcome.

“Blyth Town Council have built on the current partnership over the past five years and look forward to continuing with a successful partnership for the coming five years, working together with Northumberland County Council to help improve the town.”

Councillor Glen Sanderson, cabinet member for environment and local services at Northumberland County Council, said: “ We are committed to working closely with all town and parish councils and this is a great example of how we can achieve more by working in partnership.

“We have already had a successful agreement with Blyth Town Council over the past five years and we’re delighted to have secured their support with extra cleansing at the weekend until 2024.

“As with all these partnerships credit must go to the fantastic work done by the staff on the ground.”
