Residents invited to Berwick open event

Berwick residents will have an opportunity to find out more about future plans for the town at an event on Saturday 29 June.

The Berwick Regeneration Commission is a partnership between Northumberland County Council and other stakeholders in the town.

It aims to oversee how Berwick develops over the coming years, and wants local people to have opportunities to be involved in the future of their town.

An open event will be held in the Guildhall in Marygate from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 29 June, and everyone is welcome to drop in at any time.

The Berwick Regeneration Commission was instigated by Northumberland County Council as part of its countywide scheme to provide forums in town centres, with similar ventures started in Alnwick, Ashington, Hexham, Blyth and Morpeth.

Among the developments on display will be the latest plans for the new £20m leisure centre, the Welcome to Berwick project and other schemes in the town.

The new leisure centre will be situated on the site of the existing Swan Centre and will be run by Active Northumberland, the charitable trust that manages leisure services across the county on behalf of Northumberland County Council.

County Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “The Berwick Regeneration Commission is making good progress on a number of schemes, and this is the first event where members of the community can come along and find out more.

“As with other town groups we want local people to be involved and have their say on the future of their town and this will be a key element as we go forward with Berwick’s ongoing regeneration.”
