Youth service support for summer activities

Northumberland County Council’s youth service is supporting a range of holiday activities right across the county this summer.

The summer programme is run in partnership with a number of youth groups and voluntary organisations, with the support of the council’s youth work team.

The youth service aims to help young people discover and develop their own personal resources and provide or guide them to support which will equip them for their everyday lives and futures.

Working with partner agencies and organisations the youth service team sets up, supports and promotes activities for children and young people.

Activities are tailored to meet local needs with a diverse range of sessions on offer - from cooking and barbecuing to sports such as boxing and outdoor activities like camping.

Older age groups will be able to gain support with various aspects of their lives such as health and wellbeing, dealing with diversity and improving their employability.

Cllr Wayne Daley, cabinet member for children’s services at Northumberland County Council said:  “Structured or guided activities can be even more important during the long summer holidays and our youth service is responding to this by supporting initiatives right across the county.

“The youth service is transforming in Northumberland - so that it can best respond to local needs and target support to where it is most needed.

“A lot of summer activities are managed or hosted by partner organisations and agencies, with input from our youth workers where required.

“We are developing a new way of delivering appropriate activities for young people in Northumberland, aiming to reach a wider audience, and the partnership summer programme is a great example of this.”

The council’s youth service team will be out and about in key areas of the county during the summer to work with young people, signposting them to activities in their areas.
