Temporary car park to open in Morpeth

A Morpeth town centre car park is set to re-open this weekend (Dec 7-8) to provide extra spaces during the busy festive period.

The former library site off Gas House Lane was a well-used temporary car park until it had to be closed during the autumn to allow for demolition work ahead of the new Morpeth Leisure Centre being built.

That demolition work is now complete and the temporary car park is being brought back into use as the Christmas shopping season gets into full swing, and will remain available until the works start on the construction of the new leisure centre.

The county council has allocated £10m to fund parking improvements throughout Northumberland, producing detailed parking studies and action plans for our market towns in conjunction with town and parish councils.

The improvement programme is well underway, expanding and refurbishing existing car parks and creating new ones in many towns and villages.

Paul Jones, Director of Local Services, said: “We know this temporary car park was popular with locals and visitors to the town and we’re delighted to be able to bring it back into use at this very busy time of the year.”
