Sporting heroes celebrated at awards ceremony

A record crowd of over 440 packed into Hexham's Wentworth Leisure Centre for the annual Sport Tynedale Awards that recognise sporting achievements in West Northumberland.

The ceremony celebrated  local athletes and teams from a wide range of sports, ages and levels as well as the volunteers and coaches who work so hard behind the scenes to support them.

The event was run and organised by Sport Tynedale and Northumberland County Council with support from Active Northumberland who hosted the event.  It was sponsored by Egger UK, based in Hexham.

Former ITV sports presenter and commentator, Roger Tames presented the evening. Trophies were presented by Hexham Golf Club's head professional, Andy Paisley.

Northumberland County Councillor Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure said:
“ It's wonderful to see so many sporting achievements in our local area. The depth  and breadth of talent which has been displayed is nothing short of inspirational.
“ These awards are also a fantastic way to recognise and to applaud the dedicated coaches and volunteers who provide so many  sporting opportunities for the local community.”
There were 18 award categories and on the night  over 60 individuals and teams received recognition - either as winners or recipients of certificates.
Hexham Golfer Matty Lamb scooped the top Sportsman of the Year prize at the awards, and also the Tynedale Trophy for overall adult champion.
Runner Dan Joyce won the equivalent award for junior participants, The Ian Turner Trophy; Joyce won the English Schools 800m title, and the Scottish Schools International Athletics Board 800m championship this year.

At the end of the evening Roger Tames said: “ I was blown away by the calibre of the talent and the sporting achievements and potential in the room tonight.  I would like to congratulate all the nominees and winners and the commitment and hard work of all the volunteers who work hard behind the scenes.
