Hexham - the happiest place to live in Britain

The historic market town of Hexham has been named as the happiest place to live in Britain.

In a list compiled by Rightmove, the Northumberland town came out on top ahead of Harrogate and Richmond-on-Thames.

More than 22,000 people responded to Rightmove’s happy at home index survey with questions around community spirit, feeling safe and whether locals are friendly and polite.

They were also asked about amenities such as sports facilities, arts and culture, shops, restaurants, doctors' surgeries, schools and green spaces.

House prices were also a factor with the average house price in Hexham at £254,237 - 5% down on 2018, but 9% higher than five years ago.

Homes in Hexham are typically priced at nearly £50,000 less than the national average of £302,808.

Kelly Angus, Executive Director of HR/OD & Deputy Chief Executive at Northumberland County Council said: “Northumberland is a wonderful place to live, work and visit.  We are delighted but not at all surprised that one of our great towns has been recognised as one of the happiest places to live.

“Our own campaign, Discover our Land, has been working hard over the last 12 months to promote the virtues of building your career and setting up home in Northumberland. We know how welcoming our communities are and the fantastic quality of life people have here, so it’s wonderful that others are now also discovering what’s on offer.”

The accolade for Hexham comes a week after Northumberland was named as one of the top two places in the UK for a holiday at the British Travel Awards.
