Northumberland residents are being encouraged to discover more about their local library during Libraries Week which runs from October 8 to 13.
Northumberland Libraries have put on a packed week of events to demonstrate just what libraries in the county can offer to our local communities.
This year's national theme will focus on wellbeing and local events and activities will showcase how libraries bring communities together, combat loneliness, provide a space for reading and creativity and support people with their mental health.
Here are just some of the events taking place during the week:
Health MOTs
Northumbria Healthcare will be offering free health MOTs at libraries across the county. These will include free blood pressure checks and a chance to chat with a health trainer about making realistic and achievable healthier lifestyle changes. No appointment is needed. The MOTS will be taking place at Bedlington, Cramlington, Alnwick, Berwick and Prudhoe libraries.
Mindfulness and meditation
Customers can try Mindfulness & Meditation at Blyth Library ( Monday 8th 5 - 6.30pm) and Haltwhistle Library ( 10 October 10.30 - noon)
Discounted entry to Thermal Spa
Ashington Library and Leisure Centre will be offering half price entry to the thermal spa throughout the week and taster sessions for the Tranquillity Spa. For further information call 01670 623533.
The spa is open seven days a week and boasts a sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, aromatherapy room, monsoon showers, heated benches, foot spas and an ice feature.
Northumberland County Councillor Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for arts, leisure, culture and tourism said:
"Our fantastic libraries are really important community hubs and a place where everyone is welcome.
“I hope that people see this as an opportunity to take a fresh look at their local library, discover the range of free events on offer and encourage their friends and family to do the same."
The full programme of events is listed below and can be found on the libraries section of the council’s website www.northumberland.gov.uk
There really will be something for everyone. All bookable events can be booked on www.eventbrite.co.uk or by calling into your local library.
