Digital champions help residents get online

Residents who don’t have access to the internet, or the skills they need to make the most of it, can get free help in Northumberland libraries to open up the wonders of the web.

During Get Online Week ( 15-21 October)  residents are being encouraged to find out for themselves that getting the most out of the internet can be easy and fun.

Throughout the year, volunteer digital champions are helping out in Amble, Hexham, Cramlington, Berwick, Haltwhistle and Rothbury libraries and there are plans afoot to recruit more champions in other libraries around the county.

With a little help from the champions, residents can get online for the first time, or  learn a range of new skills including how to upload digital photos, hunt for jobs, shop and bank online and keep in touch with family and friends using Facebook, email or Skype.

Northumberland County Councillor Cath Homer, Cabinet Member for arts, leisure, tourism and culture said:
“ Around the county there are still hundreds of people who are digitally isolated because they don’t know how to use a computer.

“ The internet is a tool that everyone can use for their  benefit and our digital champions can help residents gain the skills needed to keep up with the digital revolution, all within the comfort of their local library. ”
