Council awards contract on Ponteland Development

Northumberland County Council has awarded Kier Construction the landmark development to create a combined schools and leisure campus in Ponteland.
 
The project will consist of state of the art facilities included within two brand new school buildings and a fantastic new leisure facility to include; swimming pool, fitness suite, community facilities, badminton courts, Clip N Climb, soft play, outdoor sports fields, a full size 3G pitch and a library. The Development will also see a new build fire station for Ponteland.
 
Peter Jackson, Leader of Northumberland County Council said: “I am delighted the contract has been awarded to Kier Construction who are local to North East and we are confident that we can now guarantee the best possible value for money for our residents and communities as well as growing the local economy through the construction contract.
 
“We know the community was delighted with the approved design for the development and ensuring top quality learning environments are available for our young people is a key priority for us. This exciting project will provide modern facilities for students for years into the future.”
 
Councillor Cath Homer, Cabinet Member for Culture, Arts, Leisure and Tourism said, “The investment into the schools and leisure in Ponteland will provide a state-of-the-art facilities for the community and an excellent learning environment for our young people.”

The development will see the existing Ponteland leisure centre demolished and replaced with a new build  leisure centre and a modern secondary school and primary school.  Other schools across the partnership have also benefited from significant investment in their buildings as part of the scheme.
 
While the 11 week tendering process has taken place, the local authority has ensured preparatory work continued on site. Tree pruning and service investigations have been carried out alongside a period of newt-trapping in order to safely re-house any protected species.
 
In addition, work is well underway to expand the accommodation on the existing high school, to ensure the temporary accommodation can be provided to accommodate the additional secondary pupils in September 2019.
 
The new development is scheduled for completion by September 2020.
